Developmental Editing vs. Manuscript Evaluation

People often ask me what the difference is between a manuscript evaluation and a developmental edit. It finally occurred to me that a direct comparison of what you get from each service might be a good idea. So here is what you should expect from a high-level edit from Bright Owl Edits. (The chart's not pretty, sorry!) The written editorial report in each case is 4,000 - 6,000 words (12-15 pages).

Some writers like having in-line notations for the suggestions as more of a guided, hand-holding approach. Some prefer to take advice and run with it. It just depends on your style, attitude toward editing, and budget.

Different editors give different levels or services under different names, or define services different ways. Do your research, and find someone who will work well with you and your style, and make sure to get all the expectations clarified before the work begins!

If you would like to discuss your manuscript, get in touch! I'd love to chat. www.brightowledits.ca/contact

Jill
